04 Locked rotor
What the control is telling you
The compressor protector tripped 4 times in a row with an average run time under 15 seconds. Compressor and outdoor fan are off.
Applies to: Communicating 2-stage condensers and heat pumps with the PCBHR104 or PCBHR105 outdoor control (7-segment display): ASXC16/18, GSXC16/18, DSXC16/18, ASZC16/18, GSZC16/18, DSZC16/18
Likely causes
- Seized compressor bearings
- Failed run capacitor or bad capacitor wiring
- Low line voltage
Test and repair steps
- Warning: Kill power to the outdoor unit before touching wiring, the compressor terminals or the control.
- Test the run capacitor (capacitance under load or with a meter) and its wiring; replace as needed.
- Measure line voltage while the compressor tries to start; it must stay within the rating plate range - contact the utility if supply is low.
- Check compressor windings and try a start; replace the compressor if it is mechanically locked.
- To reset a lockout, interrupt the 24 VAC supply to the outdoor control (power cycle the low voltage), then retest.
