Read the last stored fault code (9MXE / 9MXT)

Furnace · KeepRite (F/G)9MXE Single-Stage Furnace, KeepRite (F/G)9MXT Two-Stage Furnace

The control remembers the latest fault codes through power loss. Briefly pulling one main limit wire makes the status LED flash the last stored code, then a component test starts. Does not work during a thermostat call or blower off-delay.

  1. Leave 115 V on; end any thermostat call and wait out blower delays
  2. Watch the status LED through the blower door
  3. Open the control door and, for a couple of seconds only, pull one main limit wire off and put it back
  4. Read the flashed code against the service label
  5. A component test sequence follows; refit the door

Applies to: (F/G)9MXE and (F/G)9MXT furnaces

Source: KeepRite ICP (F/G)9MXT Service and Technical Support Manual 440 04 4321 10, Retrieving Stored Fault Codes, p.14; (F/G)9MXE Service and Technical Support Manual 440 04 4311 09, p.14. Written in our own words; check the manual for your exact model.

Run the furnace component self-test (9MXE / 9MXT)

Furnace · KeepRite (F/G)9MXE Single-Stage Furnace, KeepRite (F/G)9MXT Two-Stage Furnace

Runs inducer, igniter and blower speeds briefly; gas valve and humidifier terminal are not energized. Will not start with a thermostat signal or running delays. Holding the jumper longer than 2 seconds makes the LED flash code 10 and the request is ignored.

  1. Remove the blower door, disconnect the thermostat R lead at the control and hold the blower door switch closed
  2. Jumper terminal C to the TEST/TWIN quick-connect for about 2 seconds, until the LED goes off, then remove the jumper
  3. The LED repeats the previous status code 4 times, then the inducer starts
  4. 9MXT: igniter on after 7 s for 15 s; blower LO-HT, HI-HT, COOL speed 10 s each; inducer low for 10 s and stops
  5. 9MXE: igniter on after 7 s for 15 s; blower continuous-fan, heat and cool speed 10 s each; inducer stops
  6. Reconnect R, restore the door, confirm the furnace shuts down and restarts from the thermostat

Applies to: (F/G)9MXE and (F/G)9MXT furnaces

Force a defrost cycle or skip the 5-minute delay

Heat pump · KeepRite *SA/*SH Single-Stage Communicating, KeepRite *CA/*CH Two-Stage Communicating

Shorting the 2-pin FORCED DEFROST header for 5 seconds on a non-communicating system starts a defrost (communicating systems start it from the wall control). Full defrost if coil is 32 F or colder and outdoor air under 50 F; otherwise a short 30-second defrost.

  1. Make sure the system is running a heating call
  2. Short the two FORCED DEFROST pins with a screwdriver for 5 seconds, then release
  3. To skip only the 5-minute start delay, short the pins briefly and release
  4. Quiet Shift compressor on/off delays are included in a forced defrost when enabled

Applies to: Communicating *SA/*SH and *CA/*CH heat pump outdoor boards

Speed up the defrost timer for testing (J1 speed-up pins)

Heat pump · KeepRite N4H4/R4H4/WCH4/NXH5 Heat Pump

Shorting the J1 speed-up pins shortens the defrost timing. On Quiet Shift-2 boards hold about 5 seconds and release; defrost thermostat open gives only a short defrost, closed a full cycle.

  1. Put the unit in heating and let the coil frost (defrost thermostat must be closed for a full cycle)
  2. Short the J1 speed-up pins with a flat screwdriver for about 5 seconds, then release as soon as the reversing valve changes position
  3. The unit stays in defrost for the remaining cycle time or until the defrost thermostat reopens
  4. After the test reconnect anything you disconnected

Applies to: N4H4/R4H4/WCH4/NXH5 heat pumps; older split heat pump defrost boards

Turn 230 V brown-out protection off or on

Air conditioner · KeepRite *CA/*CH Two-Stage Communicating

Shorting the forced-defrost pins at power-up with the outdoor sensors unplugged flips the brown-out protection setting; it is remembered through power cycles.

  1. Power the unit down
  2. Unplug the OAT and OCT sensor connector and short the two FORCED DEFROST pins
  3. Power up and keep the short on for at least 3 seconds
  4. Amber flashes 6 = protection active, 5 = protection off; repeat once if you land on the wrong state
  5. Power down, plug the sensors back in and remove the short

Applies to: *CA/*CH two-stage communicating outdoor boards

Source: KeepRite ICP split A-C + HP (R-410A & R-22) Application Guideline and Service Manual 421 08 5400 04, Brown-Out Protection Defeated, p.57. Written in our own words; check the manual for your exact model.

Cut the cooling blower off-delay to 5 seconds (9MXE)

Furnace · KeepRite (F/G)9MXE Single-Stage Furnace

The cooling blower off-delay is 90 s; jumpering Y/Y2 or Y1 to DHUM cuts it to 5 s. The DHUM input logic is reversed: 24 V means no dehumidify call.

  1. Jumper Y/Y2 or Y1 to the DHUM terminal on the control
  2. Cooling blower off-delay then drops from 90 s to 5 s

Applies to: KeepRite (F/G)9MXE

Switch the post-defrost outdoor fan delay off or on

Heat pump · KeepRite *CA/*CH Two-Stage Communicating

Normally the outdoor fan stays off 20 seconds after defrost ends. Shorting the forced-defrost pins for more than 15 seconds while idle toggles this delay; it is kept through power loss.

  1. With the unit in standby (amber LED on solid), short the FORCED DEFROST pins for more than 15 seconds
  2. The LED starts flashing when toggled: 4 flashes = delay defeated, 3 flashes = 20 s delay active
  3. Remove the short; the code stays up until the short is removed and about 5 seconds after
  4. If you got the wrong state, repeat the toggle

Applies to: *CA/*CH two-stage communicating heat pump boards

Source: KeepRite ICP split A-C + HP (R-410A & R-22) Application Guideline and Service Manual 421 08 5400 04, Defrost / fan delay defeat, p.56-57. Written in our own words; check the manual for your exact model.
