Standing-pilot lighting (manual and millivolt valves)
What happens, in order
- Turn gas cock knob to OFF and set wall switch or thermostat to off or lowest
- Wait 5 minutes (10 minutes with LP) for gas to clear
- Turn the knob to PILOT, press and hold it, and light the pilot
- Hold the knob for 2 minutes, then release; if the pilot goes out, repeat to let air out of the pilot line
- Turn the knob to ON; manual models burn continuously, millivolt models follow the switch or thermostat
- To get from PILOT to OFF the knob must be pushed in first
- If the pilot lights without pressing the knob, replace the valve

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
